गुरुनानक देव हे शीख धर्माचे संस्थापक गुरू . नानक यांचा जन्म आजच्या पाकिस्तानातील लाहोर जवळ तळवंडी येथे एका हिंदू कुटुंबात झाला. या गावाला आता नानकाना साहीब असे म्हटले जाते. देशभर गुरू नानक यांचा जन्म दिन प्रकाश दिन म्हणून कार्तिक पौर्णिमेच्या दिवशी साजरा केला जातो.....

गुरुनानक लहानपणापासूनच धार्मिक होते... लहानपणी मौंजीबंधनावेळीच त्यांनी जानवे घालायला नकार दिला होता. ज्ञान प्राप्तीनंतर शीख धर्माच्या तत्त्वज्ञानाचा प्रचार व प्रसार करण्यासाठी त्यांनी देशभर यात्रा केली. जगभरातील धार्मिक स्थळांनाही त्यांनी भेटी दिल्या.....

सर्वसामान्यांमध्ये देव, धर्माबाबत जागृती निर्माण करण्यासोबतच त्यांनी शीख धर्माची शिकवण दिली... गुरुनानक यांनी आयुष्यभर हिंदू व मुस्लीम धर्मियांना एकतेचा संदेश दिला. त्यांनी त्या काळात केवळ भारत भ्रमणच नव्हे, तर इराकमधील बगदाद आणि सौदी अरेबियात मक्का- मदिनेचीही यात्रा केली होती. अनेक अरब देश त्यांनी पालथे घातले होते.....

गुरुनानक यांची मानवतावादावर दृढ श्रद्धा होती... त्यांचे चिंतन धर्माच्या सत्य व शाश्वत मूल्यांचे मूळ होते. म्हणूनच जात-धर्म या पलीकडे जाऊन सर्वानी एकत्र यावे, अशी त्यांची इच्छा होती. एकदा बेई नदीतून स्नान केल्यानंतर बाहेर आल्यावर त्यांनी ‘कुणीही हिंदू नाही आणि कुणीही मुसलमान नाही, सर्व जण मानव आहोत’, असा नारा दिला होता. हे जग बनविणारा एकच ईश्वर आहे, असे त्यांचे म्हणणे होते. धर्म हे दर्शन आहे, दिखावा नाही, अशी त्यांची धारणा होती. त्यासाठी अनेक केंद्रांची साखळी निर्माण केली. त्यांनी एकता, श्रद्धा व प्रेमाचे तत्त्वज्ञान मांडले. ते क्रांतिकारी विचारांचे होते. त्यांनी नवीन विचारधारेचा प्रचार केला.
